A circle of friends transitions from the academic world of Georgetown University to lives consumed by their desires for intimacy and professional success. Kirby works as a waiter to fund his legal education, while his roommate Kevin grapples with his quest for love while working at a newspaper in Washington D.C. Jules, despite being an object of admiration and jealousy, harbors hidden struggles. Wendy, reserved and modest, is enamored with Billy, a charming saxophonist with a penchant for recklessness. Alec craves both a career in politics and the semblance of a conventional family life. His girlfriend, Leslie, an ambitious architect, remains unaware of his betrayal, although his newfound allegiance to the Republican Party is enough to deter her from considering marriage.
