Charles Dobbs, a British intelligence agent, is tasked with investigating the suspected suicide of Samuel Fennan, a Foreign Office official. Dobbs believes that Elsa Fennan, who survived a Nazi extermination camp, may hold valuable information, but other authorities are pressuring him to abandon the case. To discreetly gather information, Dobbs enlists the help of a retiring inspector named Mendel. Despite encountering several unexplainable discrepancies, Dobbs perseveres in his pursuit of the truth. Meanwhile, he is dealing with personal challenges at home due to his wife's extramarital affairs, though he still loves her deeply. Dobbs is also reunited with Dieter Frey, an old comrade recruited during the war. Alongside a colleague and a retired police officer, Dobbs endeavors to uncover the identity of the spy and the true perpetrator behind Fennan's death.
