'With his tiny body and huge ears, Despereaux is a mouse born with his eyes open, brave enough not to fear knives and cats like other mice, and with big dreams. Introducing himself as a gentleman and learning to read adventurous tales, Despereaux wants to explore beyond his own world and befriends Princess Pea, a human. Eventually, fearing that his actions will bring trouble upon them, others are afraid that Despereaux will be exiled from his world. He then becomes friends with Roscuro, a cat who is also an outcast and who saves him from trouble. Despereaux has a life to live just like the stories he reads.'
